The Problem

Why University Timetabling Is Hard — and How Axis Solves It

University timetabling is a constraint-satisfaction problem with hundreds of competing variables: module demand, room capacity, lecturer availability, student group conflicts, lab equipment requirements, and examination periods. Most institutions manage this in spreadsheets, which fail at scale and create a cascade of manual corrections every semester.

Kampus Axis replaces the spreadsheet with a scheduling engine that models your institution's constraints and generates compliant timetables automatically. Clashes are detected and flagged before the timetable is published — not discovered by students on day one of term.

  • Constraint-based engine: rooms, lecturers, student groups, equipment
  • Real-time clash detection across all modules and groups
  • Handles semester, trimester, and modular academic calendars
  • Supports multiple faculties with independent scheduling rules
  • Publishes to the student portal the moment the timetable is approved
  • Allows manual overrides without breaking the automated schedule

Room Management

Room Allocation and Utilisation Optimisation

Axis links timetabling directly to your room inventory — including lecture theatres, seminar rooms, computer labs, and specialist facilities. The scheduling engine allocates rooms based on capacity, equipment requirements, and accessibility constraints, maximising utilisation across the institution.

Real-time room occupancy reports show which spaces are underused and which are chronically overbooked — giving facilities and academic planning teams the data they need to make better decisions about space investment.

  • Configurable room types: lecture theatres, labs, seminar rooms
  • Capacity-aware allocation — no overbooked rooms
  • Equipment and accessibility flags per room
  • Room utilisation dashboard for facilities planning
  • Ad-hoc room booking for events and meetings

Exam Scheduling

Integrated Examination Timetabling

Exam scheduling is a separate constraint problem from the teaching timetable — and Kampus Axis handles both. The examination scheduler respects student module enrolments, preventing a student from being assigned two exams at the same time. Invigilator assignments, seating plans, and room allocations are all managed in the same module.

Once published, the exam timetable appears in the student portal automatically. Students receive notifications, can download personalised timetables, and can request invigilation accommodations through the portal workflow.

  • Student-conflict-free exam scheduling based on enrolment data
  • Invigilator assignment and duty scheduling
  • Seating plan generation per exam hall
  • Student portal integration — personalised exam timetables
  • Special accommodation workflow for students with disabilities
